Institute for State Ideologies (INSTID) held Russia Day 2010 at the London School of Economics on 19 March. The purpose of Russia Day is to raise interest in Russia among the British public, and to advance understanding of Russia’s policy towards Europe among  analysts, experts and advisors.

The centrepiece of Russia Day is Russia Debate held at 4 to 6 pm at the Old Theatre, Old Building, LSE (Old Theatre, LSE Old Building, Houghton street, WC2A 2AE).

SPEAKERS

The speakers at the Debate are British experts on Russia and include:

Roger Munnings CBE, UK Special Trade Envoy to Russia, formerly Chairman and CEO of KPMG Russia/CIS
Alex Bertolotti, Partner, PWC and Chair of the City UK-Russia Committee
Jonathan Stern, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies
Mary Dejevsky, The Independent
Edward Lucas, The Economist
Sam Greene, deputy head Moscow Carnegie Centre
Representatives of the FCO and Russian Embassy in the UK
The Debate is chaired by Dr Natalia Leshchenko, head of research, INSTID

TOPICS

Topics for discussion include:

1. What security does Russia propose to Europe?

2. How close is Russia’s media image in UK to reality?

3. Can we do business with Russia?

4. Do Russia’s proposed gas pipelines put Europe in jeopardy?

5. How can Russia become a global player?

The audience will comprise policy advisors and country risk experts, Westminster and city professionals as well as LSE students. At the end of the Debate, the audience will take a vote on what the UK position towards Russia should be.
